Longs Peak

Longs Peak is a 14,259-foot peak located in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The route taken was the Keyhole Route, starting from the Longs Peak Ranger Station. The climb began through a pine forest and continued The Keyholeup Mills Moraine. The trail then went around the north side of Mt Lady Washington and led to Granite Pass. From there, the ascent continued towards the Southwest into the Boulder Field. Upon reaching the Boulder field Campsites, one must leave the trail and start scrambling over medium to large size boulders to reach the Keyhole.

As you ascend towards the peak, you will come across the Key Hole and the Agnes Valle Memorial Shelter. FromAgnes Valle Memorial Shelter here, the trail continues towards the west side of the peak, leading to the Trough. You will have to climb up the Trough until you reach an area known as The Ledges. Be cautious as The Ledges is a narrow trail with a steep dropoff on the south side of the route. The Ledges will guide you to the Home Stretch, which involves class 3 climbing. Once you have reached the top of the Home Stretch, you will have successfully reached the summit.

It is advisable to begin the ascent early to reach the summit before afternoon thunderstorms. On average, it takes about 14 hours to complete the round trip from the parking lot to the summit and back. One alternative is to reserve a campsite at the Boulderfield and begin the climb from there.
