Reading topographic maps requires some imagination. When you look at a map, you must understand that you are viewing the area from above. The lines that twist and turn on the page represent a single elevation. Wider-spaced lines indicate a gentle slope, while closer-spaced lines indicate a steeper slope. If lines meet, it indicates a cliff.
